Week 18: A Weird One

Wow, another week is gone!?

How is everybody! Happy Birthday tomorrow DAD!  It also sounds like it could be the best year ever of BYU bball too. That’s amazing. I can't believe how good they are doing. That would blow my mind if they got a #1 seed in the big dance. Cheer 'em on for me!

So this was a pretty weird week.. Our best week teaching, we got 22 member present lessons...but super weird, I don’t know where to start...



So starting Monday weird stuff just started happening and kept happening all week. On Monday, one of our lessons was with Jofferson and his friends and neighbors, etc. We were going to watch a video. Then this crazy Jehovah's Witness lady (who always tries to tell us we need to praise the Jehovah god) on this one particular street apparently followed us and joined our FHE. So we watched the restoration video instead. We bore our testimonies, gave her a Book of Mormon and challenged her to read and pray about it. She then told us we were stupid and wrong.

Anyway she is a pain and followed us into another lesson on Saturday. She doesn’t really interrupt the lessons, but at the end tells us we're wrong and don’t know how to read the bible.  She also tells how she finished 3rd in her class in college and that all JW’s "memorize the bible," and most of them also know Hebrew (right).  She's really a pain in the butt. I swear she sits in front of her house and waits for us all day. It's getting kind of annoying. 

To continue the weirdness one day we went to Jefferson’s house a different way through the bukid (or fields) and there were like 20 college kids sitting in their little compound supposedly doing a service project. They don't do those here. Don't know what they were really doing.

Just a weird week. So on like Tuesday we OYM'ed this guy and got an appointment to teach him the next day (note: OYMed = Open Your Mouth, used to be called GQing or asking the Golden Question).  The next day we went over there and apparently his cousin and friend were out drinking a few days before and were on a motorcycle and hit a curb and the driver was able to hold on to the bike but it worked like a catapult and threw the kid (18 or so) in the air. He hit his head on the cement and went to the hospital.

That day we went to teach him he wanted us to go to the hospital and bless him (he didn’t really know who we were or how we would bless him but he wanted us to go there), so we did. Hospitals are crazy here. So we went in and they took us to the ICU.  It was bad. We couldn’t even bless him because we couldn’t touch he head but we said a prayer for him at his bedside. We then went back and taught basically what seemed to be his whole extended family about faith and just kind of about life. It was a crazy experience. They were definitely humbled and ready to be taught. We found out more information. Unfortuately the kid had internal bleeding and really never had a chance. He died early Sunday morning. We went back on Sunday and they had the funeral already set up and we gave our condolences.

Hopefully we can teach them this week. But with funerals being basically a huge party here, it might be hard.  I can't help but think that there is a reason we were there at that point in time. It's a pretty sad thing, but maybe God is trying to help them see what they need to do with their lives. We don’t think it was a coincidence we were led to them at this point in time.

We have some good new investigators. Some of our baptism dates have been pushed back, but I think with time we will dunk them too. We will only have one bap. on the Mar. 12th, but we should have some more on the 19th and on the 26th.

Missions are definitely a time of learning and growth, and I don’t think after its all said and done that I'll ever be the same person. But I know it will be for the better. I am so thankful for how much the Lord loves and cares for us all and watches and is part of our lives every single day. I love it here.  This place is really, really different and has a lot of problems but I am thankful to be on a mission and I am glad to help the Lord.  There are so many people already that I will never forget and I am so glad to have met here in the Philippines.

Thanks for all your support and prayers. I miss you but I know that this is where the lord needs me and that soon enough I'll get to see my family again! I love you and I am safe, happy and healthy here in the Philippines.

1. Did your apartment ever get inspected?

Not yet, but we spent a long time cleaning it and it looks way better.

2. Glad you're developing a real love for the scrips. Bishop wanted to know your favorite scripture for your plaque here at the church house.

Oh man, that’s a hard question. I have a lot favorites... but I'll go with D & C 64:33-34

34 Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind; and the willing and obedient shall ^eeat the good of the land of Zion in these last days.

 35And the rebellious shall be cut off out of the land of Zion, and shall be sent away, and shall not inherit the land.

3. You guys ever drink soda pop or just water or what?

In the apartment we always drink water and out we pretty much always drink soda. Soda is just guaranteed safe so it's better than a sketchy water any day. It's lame though -- they have no Dr. Pepper. They have Coke, orange soda, Sprite, harder to find they have Pepsi, Mt. Dew and Sparkle (basically Mt. Dew made by Coke company).

4. You get some new shoes made? Get 'er done! 

Not yet, but I'll look for some today.

5. Do you get peanut butter locally or just shipped to you? Do they have USA snacks like Snickers or Doritos?

PB is made in the USA or sometimes New Zealand. They do have some PB made here but it's not as good. And they have Snickers and Doritos but they are kind of pricey, but we get them sometimes. They have some good snacks here, like just cookies and stuff, and they have tons of flavors of mentos (Mom would be jealous).

6. Are there any big people there, either fat or tall? Or are they all small?

90 percent of people are skinny and small. Then there is like 9 % that are short and fat. And like .00000000001 percent tall people like me. 

7. Any girls following you around (figuratively speaking) like there were in New Jersey?

Ah I don’t know.  There are a lot of girls that try to flirt with us but we just ignore them. I'm pretty sure we look like a one-way ticket to the states to them.

8. Give us some basic Tagalog. Where is the bathroom? Or: I believe in Christ. Stuff like that.

Nasaan and SR? (where is the bathroom) Nasaan ang pantaloon mo? (where are your pants, useful around naked children)

Week 17: Hot, Hot, Hot!

AJ: Umm..mostly cleaning... the mission got new couple missionariess that are in charge of inspecting apartments. Rumor is they are headed for Tuguegarao because these haven't been inspected here in like 5 years or something.

DAD: Mom said u r going down! for having a messy apt. She wants a pic if u actually get it clean --

AJ: It is clean now. In all honesty it was pretty bad when i got here. Some of the stuff we cleaned up has probably been there for a long time.ha. Ill have to give you some pics next week.

DAD: (After sending picture of chili burger and fries) You like that picture?

AJ: That is just RUDE!  Elder Weaver keeps reminding me that he is going home to the land of Dr. Pepper and chili burgers and football in just three months. He is so trunky!

DAD: This is for Weaver:

DAD: Next time you're in McDonalds u should take some pix. Supposed to be pretty classy, right? BTW, they are opening a McDee's here in Washington. Oh yeah, and I saw Dee and DT two weeks ago. They miss u.

AJ: Oh ya McDee's are nice, a little nicer than in America but everything else in this country is pretty much lower quality than in America. But ya, McDees is sweet. truly an oasis in the desert.
Tell DT and Dee I said Hi. Also you should ask them about Taylor Simpson, the 18-year old kid DT.and I began teaching and he was going to get the missionaries to him. He was pretty bright and lived with members. I hope they were able to help him.
DAD: I texted them. DT said they have committed Taylor for baptism on the 5th of March and he is coming to church -- that's awesome! He said you really helped Taylor a lot.
AJ: Here's the big letter. That's cool about Taylor. Talk to ya next week.

Well another week is gone, a pretty good week. It was kind of weird. It was fast, but long... humbling and a week of growth – but a fun week.. and the work is going well. It has really got hot this week too.

Three of the people we teach told us about visions they had. Thankfully they weren't satanic or crazy. One lady had a dream, with words that are in the Book of Mormon about the straight and narrow path. She said she needed to change her life around and stuff, then she promptly left her family again (she disappears to Manila all the time). Its pretty bad. there are some young kids and the dad is enlisted in the army.

Another kid told us about a dream that he had about Jesus and Peter, James and John, and what he had to do to be happy in life. All the dreams and stuff weren't contrary to anything in the gospel. Anyhow its been a good week and we have had a lot of success.

I really love the scriptures. Personal study is my favorite time of the day . I finished the Book of Mormon (BOM) a few weeks ago and I picked back up on reading the 4 gospels. I am finished with Matthew and Mark and almost done with Luke. Scripture stories are so awesome. And I have so much to learn from the life of Christ. For sure set a side time to read everyday. It is truly rewarding and once you get into the stories, it is kind of addicting.

Well I don't have a whole lot more to say about this week in particular. So I'll try to answer the questions.

Some questions:

1. That's great that you have some baptisms scheduled. Can you tell us about who you are teaching and what they are like.

We are teaching a mom and her kid and they have been awesome. They are really hard to find at home and the mom just got a new job and she has to work on Sundays, but she is trying to get out of it. We are going to have to push the date back a few weeks because she hasn't gone to church the last 2 weeks. She has been reading and if she can fix the working on Sunday thing, it should work out.

We are teaching another kid...we baptized his brother last week and he had been kind digressing but after the baptism of his brother he showed a desire to get baptized himself for the first time. He prayed and got a definite answer about the truthfulness of the BOM but we still have a long ways to go with him. There may be some morality issues as well.

And our other one with a baptism date is a 10-year old girl named Lezel. It was pretty bad last week -- we taught the Word of Wisdom and she had problems with tea and coffee and her dad had given her cigarettes and beer before. That really threw us a curve. But she has been pretty awesome this week and we have seen a lot of progress. She immediately stopped all of the word of wisdom things. She now lives next to or with her uncle who is a really active member and she likes going to church so she can be a good convert and we think she will stay active for a good while. Hopefully we can help her build a strong enough testimony that she will continue when adults don't bring her.

Jofferson is doing awesome. He goes to seminary every day – it's a decent ways away too. He also comes to church by himself (his parents aren't very nice people) and he got the priesthood and passed sacrament yesterday. Michael also got the priesthood, yesterday. Its pretty cool to see them get into the service and everything of church.

2. Do the people there have regular jobs and work eight hours a day? Are there factories there and stuff. What about white collar jobs like offices and things?

It seems like their jobs are a lot more physical labor and long hours and they only make like 8 dollars or less in a whole day. There are some factories like Coca Cola and it seems like tons of people like to buy a tryke and do that. I don't think they make very much and it wouldn't be fun to drive a motorcycle everyday for12 hours a day. It would be really hard to live here.

3. I found some pix online of Asocena (dog meat) and they still had paws attached and stuff. Is there a lot of gross food in the markets there?

The grocery stores and stuff in town are pretty decent but there are lots of nasty street food and they have little places that just set raw meat out on a table and it sits there all day til it sells. We stay away from that. Those are quick ways to get sick.

4. Do you guys have a fridge for cold drinks and stuff?

Yea we have a half-size freezer/fridge. Its pretty nice. We chug down the water. It is really heating up this week.

5. Is there a food you really like, maybe one that measures up to an Astro Burger chili burger and chili cheese fries?

Not even close ... but there is some good stuff like Spanish bread (roll with cinnamon spread in the middle) and strawberry cringles (like the chocolate ones I told you about a few weeks ago). And this stuff called Bucci. Its like a cinnamon ball with sesame seeds on the outside. Might be Chinese... but food back in the states is better. 

6. Have you gotten any snail mail letters, maybe from the pouch mail/mission home? I know Kenny Gordon said he sent you a letter and Mom has sent you some.

I have gotten a real letter from Elder Shelley and 2 Dear Elders from Mom and from Bro Gordon. I really appreciate the letters. Tell Bro. Gordon thanks, I enjoyed getting a letter from him

7. Let me know if those pix turn out good.- awesome and quick, keep them comin'

8. Are those Tuguegarao pix last week from your apartment or what?

That's from downtown. Not quite as busy at our apartment but still pretty busy. In this week batch i sent a couple from our apartment balcony.

9. You should have them make you some shoes. Yours were looking pretty beat in the pic you sent. We can put extra money in if you need it. Gotta have good shoes. Let us know if we need to do something.

OK I'll look for some shoes. I also might buy the dictionary in the next week or two. It's around 20 bucks American I think. Oh and Jesse Sparks is a guy that went to my mission a few years ago. I don't know him but he was telling me about the mission on Facebook.

Well I gotta run, the work is great and I am loving it, even the heat...

Week 16: No transfer!

 

So we didn’t get transferred. Yea! Things are going really great here and time is flying by at an unbelievable pace! We are healthy and happy and working hard and having success!

This week Michael Rodriquez was baptized.  He is 18, and his family has been investigating for like 3 years. We think the past missionaries have waited for the whole family and they never could all get it together.  They have a lot of problems. The dad always is on army duty and the mother always disappears. It’s pretty sad but we baptized the 18 yr old. His 15-year-old brother has been really inconsistent in going to church but he came to the baptism and for the first time has told us he really has a desire to baptized. I think his brother’s example is going to be huge. Michael also gave us some referrals of his friends so that is really awesome. It is sad that their parents don’t really help them much. The other day they hadn’t seen their mom in like 3 weeks and they had no more food. We went and bought some food. It is sad though.

Elder Weaver and I were talking about it and we both agreed that we had never once been neglected by our parents before. We are pretty lucky. And Mom and Dad, I am really grateful for you and all you have ever done for me. We are lucky in the United States. There are a lot of sad, humbling things happening here.  It is definitely a third-world country in every sense.

We are just trying to share the gospel with them. We can’t change the world but maybe we can change a few people's lives if they will accept the beautiful gospel. Some good things are happening though. We have some pretty promising and impressive investigators and we should have 4 baptisms on Mar 12th. Two of them look really solid but the other 2 might have some snags or problems along the way. Either way we have a lot to teach them and they need to grow their testimony as well. But things are looking good.

Oh ya, the baptism was great. Every one was ready, investigators at the baptism, baptizer and candidate -- everyone ready on Saturday. But because our bishop wasn’t there and there was no other presiding authority there we couldn’t start till 2 hours late. Pretty ridiculous. But everyone pretty much stayed. And thankfully the relief society was cooking a ton of food and shared with everyone at the baptism while we waited for the bishop.

So last week our ward had the best sacrament meeting since I've been here. The sprit was there, it was reverent, it was even testimony meeting and nobody sang or talked about weird stuff, even the kids were pretty quiet.  Then this week they had a relapse. They started really late and it was rowdy. There was literally a dog running around sacrament meeting and the kids were crazy.... oh well… all in a days work in the Philippines I guess. This country really blows my mind some days. For instance,  all the time we see kids with their kites stuck in power lines and they are trying to pull it down... Am I mistaken or is that dangerous?

Ha so a lizard got into our cereal box and Elder Weaver and I burned the whole box to the ground. Hopefully I’ll send you a picture of the inferno ha... (note: pic did not come out good)

We taught the Iglesias. They are pretty umm…I don’t know any other way to put it but…stupid... They just tried to argue the whole time. Needless to say we aren’t going back. At least they gave us merienda...

So that’s the highlights of the week. I’ll get to the questions (from Dad) now and shoot off some pics.

Fishballs (dough mixed with fish meat, usually fried)

1. Any other strange eating experiences there? What about that half-grown baby chicken egg thing? That sounds gross!  I had some "fish balls." I guess it is just bread dough cooked in fish sauce and oil. It was ok. The dinner appt that made Elder Weaver sick tried to make us eat dinuguan again but Elder Weaver told him our stomachs aren’t used to it... I don’t think he was real happy we didn’t eat it... Everyday I see balut (the half grown egg, and cooked dog (Aso) for sale.) but I’m not real interested in trying either.... [Editor's Note: I had pix of both Balut and Asocena (dog meat), but both pictures were a little tough to stomach. If you really want to see them, search those two words in Wiki, but only for those with strong stomachs].

2. What is a door approach like there. I guess you don't really "knock" on doors do you?No actually about half the people don’t even have doors, or at least real ones. We just talk to people and ask them if we can share with them our message. Most people will listen to the message. If they aren’t interested, depending on how shy they are, they will say they aren’t interested or that they're busy or have laundry or something ridiculous to do. A lot of people will listen, but rarely are there any commitments or see any real progression.

3. Has it gotten hot and humid yet? You are prob gonna sweat big time soon, huh?Ya last week was terrible but the last 3 days have been amazing weather. Really a lot cooler. The locals pulled their jackets back out yesterday haha. It was like 70 degrees.

4. Is your bed long enough for you? I never did have a long enough one on my mission. It’s all right. A lot better than I was expecting. It’s just a little too short but I don’t mind at all. I am sure I'll have some pretty bad ones later.

5. Are your clothes holding up well? How about your shoes? Can you get cheap stuff there then?
Um, maybe. They don’t make stuff my size. I’ve looked in a few stores and no one has my size of anything shirts, pants shoes. I don’t know how much custom made stuff is. Pretty cheap compared to the USA. I am sure. My shoes are already wearing out but I took them to this old guy that sits on the sidewalk and fixes shoes all day and he sewed them up pretty good for 100 pesos(3 bucks)  At some point I might need shoes from the states or maybe I'll be able to find a custom made ones.

6. You gaining weight or losing or what? About the same or a little less. Summer is when it hits you though. So when I am sweating all day its gonna fly off.

7. You want us to send you powdered milk? Or just drink a glass of milk for you here? Just drink a glass for me. They have powdered milk here and some other fake milk. It just ain't very good !

8. Should we try to send you pix via email or snail mail or what? Email would work fine I think!

Does your apartment have a lock?  Have you had any problems with theft? 

Yes it has 2 pad locks and a regular lock. Only one way to get in as well. It’s a pretty sturdy door. We shouldn’t have a problem. Plus there are nicer houses around us so they can go rob them first right?

Funerals? Here funerals are like a huge party for a week. So when someone dies, they have an open viewing for a week in their house (disgusting) and they rent a big party stuff. And invite everyone they know to come and gamble and drink for a week... then they usually end with slaughtering a 600 pound pig. Pretty crazy eh? I don’t know how they bury them or anything though.

Week 15: First Baptisms!!!!!

Hey Howdy!

Another great week here in the Philippines. This week was really tough as far as teaching and it seemed like we were walking around all week from blown appointments but things really culminated on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday I baptized Jofferson and it was awesome.  I also baptized an 8 year old girl that lives by him, whose family is members but couldn’t baptize her. It was really cool and the rest the day we went to the baptism of 5 other people around the city. It was a really cool day. Also we have another baptism next week of an 18 year old kid named Michael. He and his family have been investigating on and off for over two years and now he is the only on that has been progressing but he has been doing really awesome and he asked us how if he can go on a mission in the future! He even wore a shirt and tie to church -- here, like not even half the members wear nice clothes to church. Elder Weaver said that the majority have Sunday clothes but are just too casual or lazy to wear them;  it kind of drives me crazy, to be honest -- so that’s really awesome.

Sunday a new investigator of ours came to church for the second time in a row, we didn’t even have to pick them up, and she brought her child as well. She seems really golden. We introduced the word of wisdom and she drinks coffee, tea and occasionally drinks but after we told her those aren’t allowed she said, if we say its not allowed she won’t use those any more because she already knows the church is true! That is some awesome faith and I am really excited for her!

Elder Weaver has been kind of sick this week but we have still been able to work.   I have been surprisingly healthy (knock on wood) and things are pretty good. Tomorrow at district meeting we find out if we are transferred or not and on Thursday is the transfer meeting in Cauauyan if one of us does get transferred. I hope not. President told a few people that they are being transferred and where but when we saw him on Thursday at MacDonald’s he wouldn’t tell us either way what was happening. I guess tomorrow we'll find out!

The ward is still pretty unorganized but they are finally helping us out more. We also reactivated this 16-year-old kid and now he works with us all the time, which is awesome for the work! It makes it so we can teach all the people where no male is present and turns every lesson into a Member present lesson, which is the goal for every lesson. His name is Jason and he is really cool. He said he dropped out of high school last November (HS here only goes to 16) so we will try to get him to go back to school. It’s cool though -- he is pretty bold and not afraid to speak up in the lessons.

Oh and almost forgot the craziest part of the week. So remember the Iglesa ne Christo guy, that said he was gonna bring a priest. Well he brought 5!!!! From all over the Cagayaun providence! I can’t believe that guy cares that much to bring all those guys. So the highlights of our wonderful little discussion, they claim that they have authority originally from Jesus Christ and that the bible is perfect. Elder Weaver was pretty clever and we kind of told them that if the Bible was perfect then they should be going to church with the Catholics or that it does have flaws and therefore their whole religion is incomplete.  They really weren’t that bright or cunning. But they were pretty stiff necked. After they would just try to argue every point.  We finally just said there was no way they could learn except by the Holy Ghost and then we both testified that if they read the Book of Mormon and prayed sincerely they would receive a witness. They said they would read and try our challenge. They were a lot nicer after that and they gave us merienda  (snack time) and we are coming back next week. If they just want to argue more than we will be done with them. But if any of them are serious that would be sweet. The Iglesia ne Christo church is pretty stupid it sounds like. Their members aren’t allowed to have Bibles... But I think our testimonies were pretty powerful. We also brought a former bishop with us. It could’ve been pretty bad I suppose but all things considered it was all right.

Well now to the questions and that’s pretty much the happenings of the week!

1. What day is transfers? Next Monday? Hope you get to stay and continue with your investigators. Isn't teaching the gospel glorious? One of the greatest feelings in the world is teaching a principle and having the Spirit testify and seeing the light in their eyes as they understand.

Tuesday we find out and Thursday if either of us do, we head out. I would have to agree there is nothing more fulfilling than teaching the gospel especially to someone who has never heard it and never understood why they are here on earth.

2. Any cool landmarks around there? national monument or anything? I wondered if there was any historical stuff with WW II or anything?

Ummm... There is a big kind of cool church that looks like something out of assassins creed and a hour way is calleo caves. WE have been to the church but I haven’t been to the caves yet. Tuguero is just kind of big city with cool stores is what it is known for... not really that much cool stuff around except the stores. And WWII not really but most of the older people really dislike the Japanese because of what they did. And they love Macarthur

3. You having a hard time getting up early?

I am pretty used to it on this end. The first month in the MTC was hard but now I'm used to it. We always pass out at like 10:00 we are always wasted...

4. Do you study mostly language in the a.m. or gospel stuff?

1 hour personal study first - I just read and find scriptures for lessons. 1 hour comp study -  we study the PMG  and handbook and sometimes practice teaching parts of the lesson to each other..  then we get 1 hour of Lang. study. - I usually read out loud the Tagalog Book of Mormon for 15 min, work on vocabulary for 15 minutes, and do whatever I need to study. We have had a lot of stuff in the mornings lately so I haven’t really got in good language study lately :(

5. How much news on sports do you get? Do people have TV's and get games?

I get absolutely zero except what you give me. People always say the love NBA but I rarely see anyone watching it. I think cable is kind expensive (at least to Filipinos, in us dollars it is probably only 8 bucks a month)

6. Does your town have a PBA basketball team?

No,  I guess no cities have teams, they are owned by businesses and they just play in random places across the country that they set up but none here as far as I now. The locals all think the PBA is kind of lame too.  They all like Lebron...

7. There's a college near you. Do they do sports and is like one of our colleges?

I don’t know... The other day on splits I heard a basketball game going on from the college but that’s the first and only time I have heard anything.
